Markham Pond Planting

Markham Civic Centre Pond Planting

Part 2, Saturday June 8th 2013

After many years of planning and fund-raising, the creation of a native plant garden beside Markham Civic Centre pond is under way! The first phase, planting native shrubs, took place on a beautiful fall day in 2012 and the wildflower planting will take place in the spring of 2013.

NANPS received $8,000 from Evergreen-Walmart towards this planting. $15,000 was approved by the Markham Environmental Advisory Committee for the design by Real Eguchi, $10,000 worth of equipment and labour was committed by a Markham/TRCA partnership fund, $2,000 came from the Rouge Park, Markham paid for the trucking and disposal of fill and Evergreen is helping with the planting and contributing towards the mulch.  This is truly a partnership project. The original plan was to do this as a 3 year project, but planting around the remaining part of the pond was challenging due to the existing trees, and it was decided to work with just the south edge, do shrubs this year, and the wildflowers spring 2013.   The bed was prepared this week by TRCA, 80 shrubs were planted on Sept 29, 2012 and the entire bed mulched.   A wildflower planting is planned for June 8, 2013 for which a larger invitation will be sent to community and local environmental groups.
